INTRODUCTION

You have made the right decision to be pro-active about arthritis and its debilitating effects.  Though you are in pain right now, you do not have to live this way the rest of your life.

Our "Natural Arthritis Report" is designed to educate you about various options you have for treating your arthritis naturally.  The information in this report is research- based and will not victimize you with any drugs laden with harsh side-effects. Barton Publishing Inc. takes all of our customers' health seriously and we want you to know that we would NEVER cut corners.

Therefore, every bit of the information we give is recent and researched.  However, we ask that you don't simply read the arthritis report and continue on without ever putting these words into practice.  You must consciously act upon what you read if you want to be pain-free.  Finally, in no way are the instructions in this report a substitute for a licensed doctor.  This report will simply help you and your doctor make better decisions for your health.

Over the centuries, arthritis has been a plague for most civilizations.  However, in recent decades arthritis cases have sky rocketed, particularly in developed countries. You would expect just the opposite!  But still today, in some indigenous, primitive tribes, there is NOT ONE case of arthritis.  Even more amazing for these indigenous tribes, men and women live to almost 100 years of age and go on working (planting, gathering, harvesting) up till their dying day.  Why is this?

The answer to this question is also the solution to arthritis.  Arthritis has been denoted as the 'incurable disease' but is it?  Hundreds of natural health experts say arthritis is curable and we would agree.  If followed, this report will open up a new life for you as you begin your cure.  Good luck and enjoy!

ARTHRITIS BASICS

Let's get started!

For simplicity sake, we have chosen to focus on the two most common forms of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  However, before we discuss both forms, it is worth noting the traditional medical viewpoint of arthritis differs greatly from the naturopathic (natural health healing) viewpoint.

The traditional medical viewpoint believes that arthritis is an inevitable disease that plagues all people eventually and arthritis must be treated with the use of drugs or surgery.  As you allow the mechanic to take care of your car; so you allow the doctor to take care of your body.  This travesty is a lie and costs us billions upon billions of dollars. The medical community contends there is no cure for arthritis sufferers. Unfortunately, most arthritis sufferers have bought into this lie!  However, if there is a cause for something then there is a remedy!

The naturopathic viewpoint maintains that arthritis is caused by a person's lifestyle. Specifically, the following factors may contribute to arthritis: poor diet, unbalanced diet, stress, sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep, inefficient vitamins, improper breathing and other factors.  This viewpoint also maintains that the miraculous human body will always attempt to heal itself from almost any ailment or injury if given the essential elements (listed above).

We live in a century where we want it now and we want if fast.  On the contrary, a healthy body operates on the premise that our bodies need to be continually maintained and cared for.  The naturopathic viewpoint will treat arthritis but discipline and self-control must be accompanied with these natural treatments. Though daunting, a natural treatment will result in a healthier body, more energy, more strength, increased mobility for the joints, less pain and increased overall health.

Arthritis: What are you dealing with?

You are not the only arthritis sufferer.  Arthritis has been around since man has walked the earth.  Anthropologists have discovered that Ancient Greeks and Romans, Egyptians and even cavemen suffered from arthritis.  However, it should be noted that arthritis cases are increasing expediently as we jump into the 21st century.  In fact, almost one out of every six Americans has been diagnosed with some form of arthritis.

That accounts for about 43 million people in the United States.  What is more dramatic is millions of people are undiagnosed and continue the suffering without ever stepping foot into a doctor's office.  According to these figures, arthritis is the fastest growing chronic disease in America.  Does it have to be this way?

Arthritis is often referred to as any pain that deals with the tendons or joints of an individual.  The word arthritis derives itself from the Greek words "Arthron" and "It is" which means joint inflammation disease.  Did you also know that there are reportedly over 100 various forms of arthritis?

According to Webster, arthritis is defined as acute or chronic inflammation of a joint, often accompanied by pain and structural changes and having diverse causes, such as infection, injury, or the continual use of a joint.

Some forms of arthritis are even caused by the body's immune system attacking the body's tissues and joints, called autoimmune disease.  This condition is what occurs in rheumatoid arthritis.

Though there are over 100 different forms of arthritis, the most common ones include: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and gout.  The most prevalent case of arthritis belongs to osteoarthritis, which accounts for half of all arthritis cases.

Osteoarthritis: The Most Common Arthritis

The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis, affects over 20 million Americans.  Osteoarthritis typically effects people who are 40 years of age and older. As a person becomes older, osteoarthritis appears after years of wear and tear on the joints between the bones, which is why it is called the 'degenerative joint disease'.

Due to the repeated movement and weight upon the joint, the cartilage begins to break down causing inflammation and pain.  Because of the nature of the problem, symptoms become worse and worse over time with use of joints.  Normally, osteoarthritis begins at the knees and works its way up to the hips, fingers, spine and more (typically any joint bearing weight or strain).

Rheumatoid Arthritis: The Unknown Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is characterized by the nagging pains affecting joints of the wrists, fingers, toes and knees.  Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is one of the most debilitating forms because symptoms make the everyday tasks nearly impossible. The exact cause of RA is unknown but some researchers say it is because of the body's immune system beginning to attack the body's joints.  RA is also almost three more times as common in women than it is in men.  However, there are about only 2 million cases of RA compared to over 20 million cases of osteoarthritis.

RA is also an inflammatory condition, which causes the joints to throb and eventually become disfigured.  The body becomes more and more susceptible to RA as the body ages because of the body's inability to keep up with damage repair.  At about 40, the RA victim's body is not able to produce enough collagen called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) that the body uses to repair the joint's cartilage.  As the cartilage begins to deteriorate, inflammation occurs and symptoms only get worse. Symptoms also include: inflammation, pain, little movement, and joint disfigurement.  Cartilage has been even known to harden in some cases.

PREFACE TO THE NATURAL TREATMENT

Dear Friend,

You are at a crossroads today!  You are about to embark on something that could change the rest of your life for the better.  You have a proven opportunity to leave arthritis in the past and finally live life again.  This journey is going to be worth it! However, no journey comes without discipline, dedication, persistence and patience. Over 40 years ago a man was about to make the journey to the moon and a President by the name of John F. Kennedy encouraged his nation by quoting another great man, "All great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties, and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage."

Your journey starts now and I write this because there are going to be difficulties. The natural treatment for arthritis is not your 'two-hour take-a-pill' cure.  The natural treatment will cure arthritis but it will take at least 2-3 weeks before you notice a small difference.  It will take at least a month to notice a big difference.  The reason behind this is because the body is healing and repairing itself after the 20- 60+ years of lifestyle habits that cause arthritis.  Therefore, I encourage you to stayon the day-by-day arthritis-free path!

The treatment involves your diet, exercise, breathing and relaxing techniques, vitamins you should consider and educating yourself on arthritis.  Also, know and understand that there could be people who discourage you along the way.  This discouragement could be to just have one bite of something you shouldn't.  It might be to take one drink of soda.  Don't give in!  The reason is, one step back can escalate into two steps back the next day and 10 steps back the following week.

Finally, I would like to leave you with some advice before you start your natural self- treatment.  These tips will increase the likelihood of success:

1.      Find a group of three people to be your support group.  Find people who will encourage you and ask you how you are doing.   Make sure to tell these people what you would like out of them.  (a walking partner, a biking partner, and a call every 3 days to see how treatment is going, not allow you to eat certain foods, etcÉ). Tell them what you're doing and ask them to ask you about how you're doing every few days.

2.     Get a journal!  You will be able to see your progress if you journal it.  This journal can be used to document: What foods did you eat?  How are your arthritis symptoms?  What was encouraging to you today?  What was discouraging to you today?  What foods make you feel good?

What foods make you feel bad?  This journal will allow you to see the success you accomplish and be an encouragement to keep going!

3.     Drink water!  Most hunger pains are really the body saying 'I'm thirsty'.  Pure water is the perfect drink for mankind. Stay hydrated and lubed with H2O.

4.     Write encouraging quotes to yourself.  I know people who have encouraging Bible verses all over their house (on mirrors, in car, etcÉ).  Write down whatever might encourage you to keep going as daily reminders.  There are thousands of quotes you can find on Google - just type in keywords like "inspiring quotes" or "motivation and encouragement".

5.     Educate yourself on nutrition and arthritis.  Go to your local library and check out some books.  Go to www.amazon.com and find books with good reviews and purchase a couple.  Education will be your number one weapon against the disease of arthritis.  And these will be visual reminders of the action you should be taking every day to overcome arthritis and live pain-free again.

I wish you the best of health and success, and thank you for allowing our company to help you naturally cure your arthritis.

Yours for Excellent Health,

YOUR DIET MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Why You Should NEVER Neglect Nutrition

And God said, "Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed, to you it shall be for meat."  ~ Genesis 1:29

How many times in the last month have you eaten out?  How many times in the last month have you eaten something out of a can?  How many times in the last month have you cringed with the pain of arthritis?

These rhetorical questions will hopefully help you remember that there is a link between the foods you eat and the arthritis you feel. Take a moment and think about how differently your diet would be if you lived a century ago?  How about only 50 years ago?  True, you would not have the variety of selection you do now but you would also be eating food that is fresh!  Consider thisÉ

Researchers have been studying numerous primitive tribes who live solely off the land.  Perplexed by their extraordinary health, researchers are studying why these tribes have better health than developed countries?  These tribes have documented no heart disease as well as arthritis being unheard of.  In fact, members of these communities will work right up to the day of their death (usually around 100 years of age).  How could this be?  Could it be because members of the community have never eaten a bite of processed food?  These natives have NOT eaten one additive in any of their meals. (An average American eats hundreds of additives each day.)  In fact, all of their meals are fresh and spoil in weeks if not eaten.  And finally, they live an active life.

Is this type of lifestyle possible for an average person?  Yes!  In fact, you have everything in your local grocery store to cure your arthritis if you are willing to change your eating habits.  We are also living in an age where a fitness club is on every street corner.  And finally, we have more research and information on arthritis than ever before.

The following guidelines will enable you to begin your arthritis treatment.  We cannot stress enough that this treatment is not a stroll in the park.  It will take dedication, discipline, patience, persistence and self-control.  At times you will want to give up but we stress (even more) that you will reap the benefits of your dedication.  Good luck!

Day 1 - Day 4: The Healing Cleanse

For the first four days of your natural treatment, you will fast from all foods.  This treatment will allow your body to detoxify and begin to heal itself from the years of additives, preservatives, refined ingredients, artificial ingredients, toxins and impurities.  This will not cure your arthritis but will begin to allow your body to heal. Obviously, your body is three-fourths water.  Therefore, it is extremely crucial that you drink water throughout the day.  Always have water available to drink anytime you feel the need or have the urge to eat.  During this time, you will feel the discomfort of hunger but know that this is natural.  Please follow the helpful fasting tips.

Tips for Fasting:

  1. Stay busy!  Do everything you would normally do and also add various activities to fill your time.  If you allow yourself to become bored you could possibly fail this body cleansing fast.  Some fun suggestions: paint that room you always wanted to; take a hike; clean the junk room; rearrange a room; read that good book you always wanted to read; call your old friend; enjoy the outdoors.
  2. Know that your body is going to crave what you have been feeding it for years! Just like nicotine in a cigarette; your body will crave unhealthy foods during this time.  Think positive and know that you can do it!  The rewards will far outweigh the discomfort now.

  1. Know that 75% of hunger pains are caused by lack of hydration.  It is proven that most people do not get enough water each day.  You should be drinking 10-14 glasses of pure water during this time.

  1. Alternative Fast:  Find a container where you can mix water, cut lemon slices and a tablespoon of honey together.  You can use this as a supplement to taste and for needed calories.  (Do Not Use Any Artificial Sweeteners, etcÉ)

  1. Take your water or lemon water with you in a thermos.  Keep it cold if it will get you to drink more.   However, remembering not to force feed yourself with water.

  1. Stay away from temptations!  Think about where you might be tempted to crave. Don't go to the mall, don't go out to eat with family/friends (they'll understand for 4 days), and have your significant other hide the foods that are tempting.  Before you start your fast, you might even want to get rid of some of those tempting indulgences.

  1. Be realistic!  Don't start your fast a day before your birthday (or your kid's birthday).  Realize that you need to detox for four days and begin modifying your diet after the fast.

  1. Read!  Find a good book to keep your mind off of food.  Mental health is just as important as physical health.

Alternative Juice Cleanse

If you cannot do the natural cleanse with simply water or lemon water mixture because of health issues there is an alternative.  In fact, a simple water fast could possibly be too vigorous because the 21st century diet does not allow the body to hold adequate reserves for periods of fasting.  If this is the case, juice fasting can also be an option for your body cleanse.

The theory behind the juice fast is the body cleanses itself while the juice's nutrients and minerals supply the body with fuel.  The 100% fruit/vegetable juice allows the body the energy for healing and rejuvenation.  Fruit and vegetable juices have numerous benefits for the body including: cleansing; energizing, re-building, and regenerating.  As opposed to the water cleanse fast, the juice fast supplies the body with enzymes, vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats that are important for body's wellness.  It would be important to note that the juices should be alternated with water.

Therefore, the body is only receiving a few hundred calories per day leaving the body to flush its own waste and toxins.

All one needs is to purchase a juice extractor that allows you to make your own juices from clean and healthy fruit.  You can also be sure that you have fruit that isn't laden with chemicals still.  A juice extractor is a great purchase and can be used for years to come.  If you can't find any locally, try searching www.amazon.com for "juice extractor", with the features mentioned below.

Tips for Juice Fast

  1. Do not simply drink juice.  You should only be drinking about 20% juice and 80% water during a single day.  The juice (mostly water) is simply allowing you to receive some nutrition during your 4 day fast.  Drink 4 glasses of water for every one glass of juice.  (Note: Do not drink store bought juices or juices from concentrate.)

  1. Be creative with juice mixtures.  You can find tons of recipes on the Internet!

  1. You can actually mix fruits and vegetables to make a pretty good juice.

  1. A juice extractor motor with 450 watts is recommended

  1. Do you like pulp or not?  You should know this before you buy a juice extractor.

  1. Buy a good juice extractor with a 5 - 10 year warranty.  You get what you pay for.

Day 5 - 9: The Fruits

Great Job!  You are almost there!  You have actually completed the most difficult part of the treatment.  On day 5, you are going to reintroduce your body to whole foods again.  At this point, your body has been working hard to heal itself from the various toxins in your body.  However, due to the body's hard work you must reward your body with nutritious foods that it needs (not what your taste buds want).

Therefore, you are allowed to eat raw (NOT frozen) fruits over the next five days.  Remember that your mind and taste buds might not approve at first but your body is your main priority right now.  Continue to drink water as much as possible to keep your body flushing the impurities.  Think mind over matter!

Some raw fruits you should consider:

Melons, Apples, Oranges, Pears, Bananas, Peaches, Berries, Pineapple, É and Hundreds of Others

Tips for eating fruit:

  1. Visit http://www.dole5aday.com/html/kids/nutrition%20database.html for more information on more varieties of fruits.

  1. Mix and match.  Create a fruit salad where you combine various fruits together. Better tip: Mix apples, bananas, or pears with acidic fruits like oranges, pineapple, or lemon juice to keep them from turning brown.

  1. Make a smoothie.  Put your favorite fruits and ice cubes into a blender and make a refreshing beverage.

  1. Keep a bowl of fresh and clean fruit available in refrigerator or on table.

  1. Buy fruits that are in season because of inexpensiveness and fruits will also be at peak flavor.

  1. Make fruit kabobs using pineapple chunks, bananas, grapes and berries. Refrigerate leftovers.

  1. Always, always, always wash your fruit by rinsing and rubbing surface of fruit under running water.  Just because the fruit is organic does not mean it is clean.

  1. Drink "Squeezed" Juice.  Make sure you squeeze it yourself due to chemicals in the store-bought juices.  It has been reported the chemicals sprayed unto the fruits during the growing season contaminate the juice as it is commercially squeezed into juice.

  1. Buy a juice extractor to make fruit juices.

Day 10 -15: The Vegetables

You should be able to feel the beginning of what nutrition can do to your body.  If you do not, allow yourself another few weeks to begin noticing a difference.  Between the days 10-15, you will begin adding vegetables to your diet.   Currently, you will be able to eat fruit, vegetable (raw or cooked) and water.   Be creative with your diet and continue to take notes in your journal of improvements in your body.

Some vegetables you should consider:

Tips for eating vegetables:

  1. Buy vegetables that are in season because of inexpensiveness and vegetables will also be at peak flavor.

  1. Celery sticks and carrot sticks make a quick snack.

  1. Grill some vegetable kabobs!  Use tomatoes, mushrooms, green peppers, red peppers onions and whatever else you wish.

4      Always, always, always wash your vegetables by rinsing and rubbing surface of vegetable under running water.  Just because the vegetables are organic does not mean that they are clean.

Day 16: You Have Done It!

By now you should be feeling like a new person!  We realize that it could have felt like years for the last 15 days but it will be well worth it.  Remember that healing takes time and imagine how many years you spent hurting your body with the wrong foods and drinks you consumed.  You have just cleansed your body in only 15 days, which we think is pretty fast!

Today you will begin to introduce your body to your NEW diet.  This diet is mainly simple 'common sense' tips.  In fact, most of this information is telling you the Do's and Don'ts of nutritional research.  Before we start, we would like to give you some tips that keep you from going back to your arthritis-stricken diet!

Facts You Should Know about Processed Foods

  1. The FDA allows over 3,000 additives to be put into your food.

  1. Many processed foods are nutritionally stripped bare, rendering them of little or no nutritional value.  The only thing you get is the artificial additives and empty calories.

  1. Irradiation (also referred to as "Cold Pasteurization" and "Pico waved For Your Protection") is the use of x-rays and gamma radiation on food to kill bacteria mold, viruses and parasites.  This method has been proven harmful if consumed by test animals.

  1. Processing Food Companies regularly manipulate foods by leaving foods empty of nutritional value and adding fat, sugar and salt.  The result is the body not feeling full and craving more.  This vicious addiction cycle is the beginning of our country's obesity epidemic.

  1. Some food additives, flavor enhancers are so chemically altered that most people cannot even pronounce their names.  Take a look at the back of the packaging and a good rule of thumb is 'if you can't pronounce it; you shouldn't be eating it'.

Arthritis-Free Advice: Food Tips

  1. Don't eat or drink anything from a can!  There is a reason it lasts for half a decade!

  1. Eat foods that can go bad naturally.  If it CANNOT spoil, do NOT eat it!  (Note: It has been found that landfills dug up over 30 years ago still have hotdogs that have not decayed.)

  1. A long shelf life for a product equals a short life for the consumer.

  1. If you can't read it, don't eat it! (this includes chemicals)

  1. Flour (especially white flour) has been known to wreak havoc upon arthritis sufferers.  If you try it, make sure you note the effects.

  1. Salads can be your new best friend.  Each day you should try to eat at least 1 salad. Discover several dressings that are natural and not processed.

  1. Eating less than you are typically accustomed to is not a bad thing.  Most Americans and Europeans eat far too much.  You have trained yourself to eat less through your body cleanse and it is important to maintain smaller dishes of food. If you eat out, order the lunch portion - and take home what you can't eat for a future "free meal".

  1. The word "enriched" means stripped down and supplemented with few minerals and vitamins.  Do not fall for it!

  1. DO eat foods rich in Vitamin A because they help lubricate the joints.  Vitamin A rich foods include: sweet potatoes, carrots, mangos, spinach, cantaloupe, milk, dried apricots, romaine lettuce, and broccoli. (Notice the pattern of naturally orange foods, here?)

  1. Eat meals that are about the size of your fist.  You should be able to eat 5-6 meals per day. Don't let your eyes get bigger than your stomach.

Day 16 and beyond:  A New Diet For A New Life!

You will now be able to add lean protein to your diet.  You have been on a vegetarian diet for over a half of month and your body needs protein for muscle maintenance. Therefore, slowly reintroduce your body to protein.

The following is a good list to start with.  However, we would recommend staying away from red meats specifically beef.  In many arthritic cases, beef has been known to be an unknown allergy for many arthritis sufferers.  By consuming beef again, you run the risk of having a flare- up of swelling and pain.  Keep a journal of how your body reacts to the foods you feed it.

Begin with Small Amounts of these Lean Proteins:

Fish, Poultry, Eggs, Beans, Soy, Nuts, Spinach, Dairy

Foods to Eliminate:  Saying Good Bye to the Pain

Alkaline vs. Acid Foods: What to choose?

As you have read, the typical diet of the 21st  century is a catalyst for arthritis.  If you are to prevent arthritis from destroying your life, you must refrain from processed foods and other acid forming foods.  Normally, a healthy diet should be 70% alkaline and 30% acidic.  Therefore, instead of eating acidic foods (cooked and processed), you should be eating mostly raw, fresh vegetables and fruits.

Also, reducing the consumption of meats would also be helpful to your arthritis.  By eating less meat and more fresh fruits and vegetables, you would be allowing your body to receive more nutrients and keep your acidic levels low.  The following is a list of alkaline foods (good) and acidic foods (bad).

Alkaline Foods (70%):

Acidic Foods (30%)

Blood Type Diet

If you have not heard of the blood type diet, it is time you do!  The blood type diet is effective because it consists of not eating foods that contain specific lectins determined by your blood type.  By eating a specific variety of food (also determined by your blood type) you can reduce the amount of inflammation of the body and increase kidney function.  The diet has been noted to increase blood circulation that will also reduce swelling, inflammation and pain.  It would be also recommended to know your blood type and check out Dr. D'Adamo's website.   www.dadamo.com

Where Do You Begin:  The food options are endless

You might be thinking that you are going to starve without processed foods.  You will not and you actually are going to feel like a new person who is 10-20 years younger. How do you do this?  Be creative and become an artist in cooking.  The options are limitless in terms of mixing and matching foods to eat.

God has blessed us with a wide variety of nutritious healthy foods and many of them are at your local grocery store or health store.   You can choose to cook them but do not resort to the frying method.  Boiling will also eliminate a lot of the nutrients and minerals in the process. If this sounds difficult, buy a natural health cookbook by going to www.amazon.com and searching for arthritis cookbook.

Here is a list of some recommendations:

Finally remember that changing your diet is not a weekly thing.  Changing your diet is a lifestyle change.  You will need to make the appropriate decisions to treat arthritis.

WATER: The Fountain of Youth

Did you know that 80% of the world's population is walking around dehydrated? Instead of drinking water we have become consumers of soda, tea, coffee, juices or anything with flavor. Unfortunately, most of these drinks (contain caffeine) cause your body to lose water and create a vicious cycle of dehydration and poor health.

There are hundreds of benefits of water including preventing and treating arthritis. Water also benefits the body by:

Tips for Drinking Water:

  1. Drink a big glass of water right when you wake up.  After nearly 8 hours of sleep, you are naturally more dehydrated than any other part of the day.  The water will also help flush toxins that your body has been processing during the night.

  1. If you are cold, drink warm water instead of dehydrating coffee or tea.

  1. If you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated.  Keep a bottle with you and sip on it throughout the day.

  1. Drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day.  (I.e.  200 lb person would drink 100 ounces of water per day)

What Your Body Needs to Be Healthy

Think back to your childhood and imagine a particular moment where you couldn't be more of a kid.  Perhaps it was a summer evening of playing tag at grandpa and grandmas.  Perhaps it was rolling around on the lawn with your favorite dog.  Now close your eyes and think about the experience.  What do you feel?  What do you hear?  What do you smell?  How do you feel?

If you did this fun exercise you will notice a few things.  First, you probably pictured yourself being outside (did you smell the crisp air)?  Second, you probably realized that you did not have a care in the world (including arthritis). Third, you probably remembered how active you were.

Oxygen:  A Healthy Body's Best Friend

If you have a time, go to the park and sit on a bench near a playground and observe the neighbourhood kids for a few minutes.  You will see that they are just like you were when you were a kid.  They run, jump, fall, bounce, laugh, skip, and climb all over.   And they are breathing too!  Did you know that lack of oxygen can contribute to arthritis?

Why is oxygen so important?  Obviously, it is essential for life.  However, it is also essential for blood circulation.  Did you know there are numerous studies about the benefits of breathing exercises including the longevity of life?  Also, breathing allows the blood to be rich with oxygen, which promotes healthy blood circulation.  The result is circulation to arthritic joints that need the circulation the most.

Breathing Facts:  This will take your breath away

Got Oxygen?

There are numerous ways to get oxygen in your body.  Consider how kids get oxygen? They go outside and play.  And you can too! (though it might look a little different now).  Before we go into breathing exercises, we would recommend being creative with getting oxygen in your body.  A simple solution to this is to go outside and go for

a walk.  While walking, practice deep, slow breaths to pass the time.  And finally, don't concentrate so much on breathing that you forget to look around.

There are innumerable ways to get outside: go for a bike ride, take a hike some place new, walk around the park, go for a swing (seriously, swinging is fabulous for breathing and circulation) and any other activity that involves movement.

We would also suggest buying an exercise ball.  Besides being a great exercise tool (you can do limitless exercises at home with the instruction manual), you can also bounce.  Bouncing simply requires you to sit on the exercise ball and bounce.  You will notice your breathing following a pattern and increasing your intake of oxygen.

The following is a list of simple breathing exercises that will benefit you.  We would encourage you to take 10-15 minutes a day and practice these breathing techniques. As you get better, you can take time to discover other breathing techniques.  Start exhaling your stress away today!

Breathing Exercises:  5 minutes a day

Stomach Breathing Exercises: Cleanse the Lungs and Increase Energy and Circulation

Exercise 1: The Stomach

On the floor or bed, lie on your back looking up at the ceiling.  Take some pillows and place them under your neck or knees if needed.  Practice slow deep inhales and exhales.  You should be able to notice the chest/stomach rise and fall (2 minutes).

Place your hands palm down on your stomach at the base of the rib cage.  Lay the palms of your hands on your stomach just below the rib cage (middle fingers barely touching each other) and take a slow deep breath.  As the diaphragm pushes down, the stomach will slightly expand causing the fingertips to separate.  Practice the stomach breathing by slowly separating the middle fingers by inhaling and exhaling. (3 minutes)

Exercise 2: A full breath

1.      Sitting on an upright chair.  Exhale

2.     Inhale and, at the same time, relax the stomach muscles.

3.     Continue to inhale and exhale and feel the chest expand.

4.     Hold your breath in for a moment, and then begin to exhale as slowly as possible.

5.     As the air is slowly let out, relax your chest and rib cage.

6.     Tighten your stomach muscles to contract them in.

7.     Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing.

8.     Practice for 5 minutes.

Exercise 3: Humming Bird Breath

Following the directions of Exercise 2, but alter one step.  Each time you exhale; make a 'hum' as long as you possibly can.  Make sure you slowly contract your stomach muscles as you continue to hum.  Do this for 2 minutes.  A fun exercise is to time your 'hum' and see if you can beat your records.  The extra oxygen will be liberating to your joints!

EXERCISE: Play Again!

Remember when you were young and you did the exercise called play!

Unfortunately, exercise has become a not-so-fun chore to some people, especially arthritis sufferers.  But it does not have to be that way.  In fact, exercise is actually addicting (let us explain) and its benefits are in the thousands.  We realize that exercise can be nearly impossible to do for arthritis victims.  That is why we

recommend changing your diet before you begin to exercise.

Typically, after about one month of dieting correctly (15 day cleanse + 15 days of proper dieting), you should be ready to slowly work your way into an exercise routine.  If you have already been working out before the treatment go ahead and continue your exercise routine. However, you should take it easy during the first week of the treatment due to less caloric intake.

Exercise Addicting?

Research has proven that exercise can actually cause a natural 'high' and become addicting.  Obviously, this addiction would be a beneficial habit as opposed to the countless others tempting us.  In numerous studies, exercise seems to have an effect on a person's emotional reaction to stress.  It does this by altering a person's mood. After 20-30 minutes of exercise, the pituitary gland in the brain releases natural chemicals called endorphins.

Simply put, endorphins are the body's natural pain relievers, which create a natural 'high' (often termed a runner's high) with no side- effects.  In fact, exercise is proven to be the most effective stress relief.  Other benefits of exercise include:

It is also important to note, you will not feel the endorphins kick in until your body allows them to.  Most researchers have discovered that moderate-intensity exercise lasting 20-30 minutes produces the greatest release of endorphins.  With that said, 20 to 30 minutes of exercise at 60 to 80% maximum seems to produce the best results, but surely longer duration and lower intensity will also work.

As an arthritis sufferer, it is important to NOT over-do it exercising.  Just like anything, you must begin slowly with persistence and patience and ease your way into exercising.  Practically, you most likely will not be able to feel the endorphins kick in until you work your way up to 20-30 minutes of continuous exercise.  This will take months but is well worth the effort.

Tips for Exercising:

  1. If you have been sedentary (no activity) for a long time, are overweight, suffer from high blood pressure, see your doctor before you begin your exercise routine.

  1. Choose activities that are fun and keep adding new activities.

  1. Wear comfortable shoes and loose-fit clothing that will sweat.

  1. Try to find time to exercise 3-4 times per week.  If you miss one time, you can always make it up during the day.

  1. Choose the stairs over elevators.  Choose the long way instead of the short way.

  1. Use music (headphones, iPod, etc.) to motivate you.

  1. Find a supportive group to exercise with.  Do you know of a friend who likes to walk?  Ask people to check up on you. Ask your significant other to be your partner.

  1.

Motivate yourself by training for a 5k or 10k walk.  There are plenty of great benefits you can train for.

  1. Start slow!  If you start out too fast, you will burn out.

  1. Swim or do water aerobics!  Both of these are great for group exercises and easy on the joints.  Consider buying a pool membership today.

  1. Continue to note your progress in your journal.  You will forget how much you have progressed if you don't write it down.

Day 30 - Introduce Your Body to Exercise

You have stuck with this arthritis treatment a month and you feel like you have a new body!  Congrats on staying with your new diet and it will only get better!  Today you begin your first exercise activity.  Remember to start out slow and try to make it to 15-20 minutes for your first time.  You can work your way up from there.

Traditional Treatment Options: Pharmaceuticals

Often times, doctors will prescribe simple pharmaceuticals to provide pain relief for a few hours.  However, these handy pharmaceuticals can also cause more damage than the benefits of temporary pain relief.  As the arthritis sufferer becomes more and more dependent upon the anti-inflammatory drugs, arthritis conditions slowly worsen.  These conventional approaches will eventually cause more cartilage destruction between joints and even cause an increased potential for ulcers.

Unfortunately more shocking is the use of oral Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which some experts believe should be banned!  NSAIDs' side-effects include the following: abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and liver damage.

However, what is more shocking is what research studies conclude about NSAIDs. Several research studies reported the harsh side effects caused by victims using NSAIDs.  The reports stated that one and five NSAIDs patients had a stomach ulcer without symptoms, one in 70 patients had a painful ulcer, one in 150 patients had a bleeding ulcer and one in 1200 patients died from gastric hemorrhage.

Unfortunately, even more research studies suggest the near-fatal side-effects associated with NSAIDs.

In the United States alone, 107,000 people were hospitalized last year because of various side-effects from NSAIDs.  Of the 107,000 people, 16,500 died because of NSAIDS. This travesty is shocking considering thousands of these deaths could have been prevented by using a naturopathic approach of alternative arthritis treatments.

Osteoarthritis Traditional Treatments: Drugs Used

Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen (typically known as Tylenol¨) is the prescription your mother prescribed for a headache.  Acetaminophen (an analgesic) is also the prescription your doctor would give you if your arthritis is accompanied with only pain.  It is not known the exact mechanism that makes acetaminophen work but it has been used since the FDA approved it in 1951.

There is a danger in using acetaminophen and almost 100 deaths occur every year because of the acetaminophen abuse.  Also there are close to 13,000 emergency room visits due to the commonly misunderstood side-effects from this drug.

Acetaminophen should never be digested with the use of any alcohol and should always be taken at the correct dosage (doctor advised or company's recommendation).  Various side effects include: addiction and acetaminophen-induced liver damage.

NSAIDS

NSAIDs were briefly explained above but here is another short description.  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are used to for arthritis victims experiencing inflammation and pain.  NSAIDs are non-prescription, over-the- counter pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium.  NSAIDS work by blocking the actions of the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme.  The body produces COX when joints are injured or inflamed.  Typically, NSAIDs are the next line of defence if Acetaminophen is not giving the patient enough pain relief.

As with Acetaminophen, NSAIDs should NOT be taken with alcohol and you should also follow the recommended dosage (do not exceed 10 continuous days of dosage).

Side effects for NSAIDs include: irritation and bleeding in the stomach, possible kidney dysfunction, and possible addiction.  It is also worth noting, that NSAIDs can also increase bone loss, cause liver toxicity, and reduce cartilage.  All of these will contribute to more arthritic joints, more pain and more inflammation.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are steroids used by doctors to inject the inflamed joint of the patient.  Corticosteroids imitate the effects of cortisone made by the body's adrenal glands.  Therefore the injection will control: stress of joints, immune functions and inflammation.  After given the shot, you will be advised to keep joints stationary for a day or two.

Often times, a patient will continue to get corticosteroids shots and the overuse of injections can create havoc on the person's joints.  Regular injections will eventually lead to the breakdown of cartilage in the joint and eventual total failure of the joint. Common corticosteroids side-effects include: pain, infection, shrinking of soft tissue, loss of color in the skin and more arthritis due to crystals created in joints.

Hyaluronan

Hyaluronan is a drug that is injected into the joint that acts as a lubricant and shock absorber.  This drug is similar to the body's natural substance of synovial fluid. The brand name for Hyaluronan is called Synervisc¨.  However, some patients have experienced rare but serious reactions to the drug including: difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives.  Other less serious side-effects include: temporary pain or swelling of the affected joint; rash or bruising at injection site; fatigue and body aching.

Chondroprotective Agents

This mystery agent is known for treating osteoarthritis patients.  This drug claims to reinforce the joint's cartilage from further wear and tear damage.  However, there are discrepancies among various studies that prove this.  And side-effects associated with this drug are still being studied.

Rheumatoid Alternative Treatments:

Due to the different form of arthritis, there are also different treatments for rheumatoid arthritis.  The most popular forms of treatment include: Vitamin E and Omega 6 EFAs supplements.  However other various treatments include: Omega 3 oils, Boswellia, Turmeric, Devils Claw and Cetyl Myristeolate.

We will expound on Vitamin E and Omega 6 EFAs in this section.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin with many antioxidant properties.  Due to these properties, Vitamin E has been used for prevention or treatment for numerous health conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis.  RA sufferers have taken Vitamin E as an antioxidant protecting the body's tissues and joints.  There is also research that suggests that RA sufferers typically have lower levels of Vitamin E.

Due to RA studies, researchers expressed in numerous studies that appropriate Vitamin E dosages could have the same effect at reducing RA symptoms as anti- inflammatory drugs.  Other studies also suggested possible links to Vitamin E supplementation and reduction of RA but this research is still undocumented.  Safety concerns of Vitamin E include possible blood thinning and a possible risk of death if taken consistently in higher dosages.

Below is a website where you can find a Vitamin E supplement that is quality and affordable.  The vitamin E will be delivered to you. Make sure to follow the recommended dosage.

Omega 6 EFAs

Another helpful supplement to RA symptoms are oils containing omega-6 fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA)Ñborage oil, 8, 9, 10  black currant seed oil, 11  and evening primrose oil (EPO)12, 13 .  However, studies have shown that borage oil (contains more GLA) is most likely the best supplement for RA.  Also worth noting, are the astounding effects that fish oil (containing Omega-3 fatty acids) has on RA. Specifically fish oil called EPA and DHA (3 grams/day) had astounding results taken after a 3-month trial period.

Alternative Approach to Osteoarthritis Treatment

The alternative medical approach to osteoarthritis acts like more than just a band-aid (hiding the pain and inflammation) but incorporates supplements into your diet that actually rebuilds various components of the arthritis joints while acting as an anti- inflammatory.  Let's discuss two options: glucosamine and chonodroitin.

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a natural compound found in the body's healthy cartilage surrounding joints and tissues.  In lesser concentrations, it is also found in nails, tendons, skin, eye tissue, bones, ligaments and heart valves.  This amino sugar (not used for energy) is part of the build-up of the body structure.

The supplement Glucosamine (GS) is developed through chitin (a natural polymer like substance) which is found primarily in exo-skeletons of crabs, shrimp and lobster and has been available for only the last 10 years.  The miracle polymer is abundant and can act in the treatment of osteoarthritis.  However, due to exposure to sea life, patients allergic to seafood should discuss GS supplementation with their doctor.

The reason Glucosamine is so effective is because it remedies the problem instead of hiding the problem like NSAIDs and Acetaminophen.  GS begins by building the affected joints back up by providing the body with glycosaminoglycans (GAGS) that are needed to create collagen and cartilage.  By restoring the joint with both components, the joint will eventually have less pain and inflammation.

As you continue treatment with GS, you will notice the arthritic joint healing.  The reasoning behind this is because the new collagen and cartilage aids the old cartilage by providing extra shock absorption to the joints.  The final product will be joints that are not aching, have more movement, less inflammation and better overall health.

What research says about Glucosamine

There have been almost 300 studies documenting the effects of Glucosamine on arthritis.  However, various parts of the medical community still believe that more research and testing are needed to prove the benefits of Glucosamine for arthritis sufferers.

Despite the controversy, here are some conclusions of the almost 300 studies done on Glucosamine.

Dosage

There are three products available of glucosamine: glucosamine hydrochloride; glucosamine sulfate; and N-acetyl glucosamine.  Typically, a daily dose will consist of 1500 to 2500 milligrams (divided doses throughout the day).  It should also be noted the different amounts of glucosamine base is available in each product.  For instance,

It is extremely important you calculate the appropriate dosage for your respected body weight.  We recommend you take 1000 mg for every 50 pounds body weight.

Therefore, a 150 lb. person would take 3000 mg per day (spread out throughout the day).  However, if you weigh over 200 lb, we would recommend you discuss proper dosage with your family doctor.

Below is a website where you can find a glucosamine supplement that is quality and affordable.  The GS will be delivered to you.

Chondroitin

Chondroitin entered the medical scene in the 1960s.  It is currently manufactured by the natural sources (shark and beef cartilage) or by synthetic means.  Simply put, Chondroitin sulfate are chains of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) molecules that act in providing structure and support for the arthritic joint.  Even more astounding, chondroitin supplies water, blood and nutrients to the affected joint's cartilage.

As stated earlier, osteoarthritis occurs after years of wear and tear upon the cartilage and joints.  Chondroitin reverses the degenerative process of osteoarthritis.  Numerous studies have shown how chondroitin sulfate even acts to rejuvenate and replenish the cartilage in the joint thus reducing and sometimes illuminating osteoarthritis symptoms.

Finally, you should also be aware of another benefit of chondroitin.  Chondroitin sulfate has also been shown to lower blood cholesterol.  Studies done on animals have shown that chondroitin sulfate may also prevent heart attacks as well as reduce symptoms from osteoarthritis.  Therefore, the saying "Two birds with one stone" holds some truth with chondroitin.

Dosage

Osteoarthritis sufferers are recommended to take 1,200 mg/day (400 mg/dose) of oral chondroitin sulfate.  It would also be suggested to allow the chondroitin sulfate dissolve in water before ingestion because of more rapid absorption into the body.

Below is a website where you can find a chondroitin supplement that is quality and affordable.  The GS will be delivered to you.

Natural Anti-inflammatories: A natural pain reliever

So what do you do to reduce pain and inflammation instead of using Tylenol¨ or Aspirin?  Here is a list of supplements that are natural and act as an anti- inflammatory.  You will also not have to deal with the harsh side effects linked with the listed drugs.

Omega 3

It does not take a scientist to understand that our diets have changed in the last hundred years.  What would you have eaten if you lived 100 years ago as opposed to what we eat now?  Most likely, you would be eating fresh greens from gardens, fresh meats, fresh fish from clean lakes and rivers and a much healthier fresh food diet then the mass-produced, processed diet we have today.  With that said, we do not get enough Omega 3 fatty acids which might be the most important supplement for preventing arthritis.

What are we missing out on?  For one, Omega 3 fatty acids provide the body with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).  EPA does most of its work in the bloodstream by not allowing blood platelets to thicken or clot.  Thus, inflammation is reduced to the affected area that also reduces pain to the patient.

As a bonus, EPA also aids the patient by giving the patient better sleep and healthier hormones.  The second aspect, Omega 3 fatty acids provide is decosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

DHA has a couple of main roles that are extremely important to a person's health.  For one, DHA is abundant in the brain and allows proper functioning in brain synapses (brains cells communicating with each other).  DHA's second job is providing a healthy wall for all cells in the body.  A bonus of DHA is that it is also linked with being important in vision and sperm production in men.

If the body receives enough EPA and DHA from Omega 3 (typically found in seed oils), the body will then also receive the benefits of prevention of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, renal disease, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Crohns disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  However, the truth is that most American diets do not receive enough Omega 3.  We are missing the Omega 3 boat!

Finally, Omega 3 also is a 'balancer' of the body.  Omega 3 allows the body to balance out the fatty acids (Omega 3 and Omega 6) to prevent inflammation.  If an imbalance of fatty acids (Omega 3 and Omega 6) occurs, the body's response is inflammation on joints.

Therefore, it is paramount that an arthritis patient receives the recommended dosage

of Omega 3 every day.   In fact, rheumatoid arthritis sufferers typically have lower levels of omega 3 fatty acids in their joints and blood.

Dosage

You can begin balancing your fatty acids today!  We recommend you get 170 mg to 3.6 g of EPA daily or 3-12 g of fish oil daily.  It is always recommended you use filtered and concentrated forms if possible.  (Note: Fish Oil and Cod Oil are NOT THE SAME)

Below is a website where you can find a fish oil (EPA, DHA) supplement that is quality and affordable.  The concentrated fish oil will be delivered to you.

Vitamin C: Not just immunity anymore

You might know some of the reasons for getting Vitamin C in your diet but did you know that there are numerous other reasons?  Specifically, did you know that Vitamin C also plays a role in preventing arthritis?  In the earliest of studies, Vitamin C was the common cure of scurvy.

However, as times changed we have also discovered that Vitamin C also plays a role in the body's production of collagen and elastin (essential for healthy joints).  Both are essential for healthy tendons, joints and bones.  In order for the body to operate at its optimal level, the body must absolutely receive its recommended amount of Vitamin C.

Do you know what free radicals do to your body?  First off, free radicals can cause many different diseases, including cancer.  However, free radicals can be offset by the consumption of antioxidants.  Two major antioxidants that eliminate free radicals are Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

However, this does not mean that your diet should consist of large quantities of Vitamin C.  A good rule of thumb is everything should be taken in moderation (not too much or not too little).  Therefore, it is recommended that you get your daily intake of both fruits and vegetable each day.  A fun tip is to take the 5-A-Day Challenge, which simply means you should consume 5 RAW fruits and vegetables each day.  However, research is pointing to the number should be around 5 to 9 raw fruits and vegetables.  If you follow our natural treatment, this will not be a problem.

Dosage

Vitamin C is essential for any diet.  It is recommended that you get 100 mg to 500 mg of Vitamin C daily without exceeding that amount.

Below is a website where you can find a Vitamin C supplement that is quality and affordable.  The Vitamin C will be delivered to you.

Boswellia: The Biblical Frankincense

This natural anti-inflammatory works similar to the conventional NSAIDs used for pain and inflammation.  Boswellia is similar to the frankincense used during biblical times.  In fact, boswellia aids in anti-inflammatory but also does not cause irritation or ulceration of the stomach like similar NSAIDs do.

Dosage

Boswellia can be taken by both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis sufferers.  We recommend 15o mg of boswellia extract taken at three times per day.

Below is a website where you can find a Boswellia Extract supplement that is quality and affordable.  The Boswellia will be delivered to you.

Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM)

Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) is a nutrient needed in the body for healthy tissues and joints.  This important nutrient is available in an abundance of foods such as: dairy products, meat products, seafood, vegetables, fruits and even chocolate. Unfortunately, MSM sulfate is often destroyed in food processing such as: heating, food storage, drying, cooking, preserving and mass-producing.

Therefore, most of the foods we eat are missing this beneficial nutrient.  With this, our body misses out on the other benefits including: healthy joints, healthy tissues, healthy enzyme activity, proper hormonal balance and a healthy immune system.

Along with all of these benefits, MSM supplementation is also found to help with other health ailments including: allergies, asthma, emphysema, lung dysfunction, headaches, skin problems, digestive problems, circulation, and also arthritis.

For arthritis sufferers, this wonder nutrient works on joints by: improving flexibility to the affected area, reducing stiffness and swelling, improving blood circulation, reducing pain and scar tissue and aiding in the break-up of calcium deposits.  As we age, our bodies slow down in the production of cell-making thus recovery time takes longer (we get sore).  Therefore, MSM is essential to expediate the recovery time by aiding in the rebuilding of joint tissue.

What makes MSM so effective?  All healthy joints have an abundance of collagen, which is the protein that makes up the cartilage and connective tissue.  Therefore, MSM creates the elastic bond between cells, including the flexibleness of the joints. But what helps create collagen?  MSM along with vitamins and the body's amino acids do this continually throughout the day.  If the MSM levels are low, arthritis will eventually appear.  What does research say?  A double-blind trial of osteoarthritis patients found that MSM (taking 2,230 mg/day) reduced arthritic pain after 6 weeks.

Finally, if you are not sold on MSM yetÉ MSM is also suggested for eliminating toxins that are in the body.  This all-in-one mineral could also be called the miracle mineral!

Deer Antler Velvet

Did you know that Deer Antler Velvet has been used for thousands of years and was once the cure for more than 50 diseases?  Deer Antler Velvet is considered a traditional Chinese herb that has been used for the last 2000 years.  Why is this?  If you have ever studied deer, you will know that deer antlers regenerate every year.

This is remarkable to think that antler velvet containing bone, tissue and nerves can re-grow itself.  Therefore, antler velvet research began in the early 1900s and discovered some unique properties and benefits of it.  The antler velvet contains glucosamine and chondroitin (see suggestions above), which have benefits for both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Turmeric

Turmeric is most often thought as a spice that gives curry its kick.  But, turmeric extract has also been proven to block inflammatory pathways associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

In fact, research revealed that turmeric extract stops a particular protein from launching an inflammatory "chain reaction" linked to symptoms commonly known by arthritis sufferers (swelling and pain).

Grape Seed extract

Grape Seed extract is a flavonoid-rich active compound found in grape seeds that inhibits the damage of collagen structures in the joints.  Therefore, with healthy collagen the joint's blood capillaries can supply more blood, water, and nutrients to the tissue.  People who exhibit circulation problems should consider grape seed extract as a way to increase circulation to all parts of the body (especially the joints). Consider taking 25-100 mg per dose and 3 doses per day.

Natural Medicines

While Western medicine has become the norm in many cultures, it is not the only treatment option. Conventional western medicine, often called allopathic medicine, is the system of medicine taught at most medical schools and most pharmaceutical and synthetic medicines are manufactured and marketed according to the principles of allopathic medicine. Allopathic medicine is also sometimes called orthodox medicine.

Because most of us in the Western world have grown up in a society in which allopathic medicine is the prevailing norm, we forget that, only a few decades ago, homeopathic, herbal and other natural medicines were commonly available - and freely used even by conventional doctors. While there are often heated debates about which system of medicine is 'better' than the other, many responsible doctors (whether they are allopathic or not) recognize that both have a role to play in the treatment program.

Natural medicine has often been frowned on by conventional doctors, especially by those who did not have sufficient knowledge of these medicines. However, it is encouraging to note that some medical schools are now beginning to re-introduce it into their course work, thereby providing doctors with a wider range of treatment options from which to choose. In many countries, especially in Europe, India and China, natural and homeopathic medicines are commonly prescribed by conventional doctors and represent a significant part of the total annual drug sales.

Naturopathy is a branch of medicine (just as allopathy is a branch of medicine) which operates according to the underlying philosophy that the body has an innate capacity to heal itself. While natural medicines are often called 'alternative' or 'complimentary' medicines, they are, in fact, a unique and independent form of medicine in their own right, well able to treat a variety of conditions. Perhaps the term 'holistic' medicine is more apt, given the broad range of treatment options and approaches which are to be found within the practice of natural medicine, which encompasses many different disciplines, including herbalism, homeopathy, iridology, osteopathy, chiropractic, therapeutic massage techniques, aromatherapy, acupuncture and many, many more.

Most naturopaths will use a variety of treatment modalities in order to treat their patients in a holistic way to support health, relieve symptoms and prevent future disease. In fact, even the World Health Organization defines health as being "... more than simply the absence of illness. It is the active state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being." This is a wonderfully clear description of holistic or natural medicine, which strives to support health (thereby relieving or preventing symptoms), rather than simply eliminating disease.

Although allopathic medicine certainly has a role to play and has made a tremendous contribution to medical science during the past century, there is a growing perception that it is not the only answer and that, in many cases, holistic medicine can accomplish just as much, if not more - without the risk of side effects, addiction and sacrifice to health so commonly associated with pharmaceutical drugs.

Contrary to common perception, and provided that they are manufactured in the correct way, natural medicines can work quickly and safely to promote healing. In many cases, they can succeed where pharmaceutical drugs have failed. Despite frequent reports that they are 'unproven' and 'untested', the opposite is true. Natural medicines have a long history of usage and there is a wealth of empirical evidence to support their effectiveness and safety. In addition, active clinical research is carried out by many academic hospitals and universities to support the extensive traditional and empirical evidence behind natural medicines.

It is also important to know that, like any medicine, herbal and homeopathic medicines must be manufactured in the correct way, following acceptable procedures and manufacturing methods to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety. Due to the recent rise in popularity of natural remedies, many companies have sprung up to take advantage of the market. Unfortunately not all of them are equipped to manufacture to the correct standards, often resulting in a flood of inferior (and sometimes even unsafe) remedies onto the market - and giving natural remedies a bad name.

Even some pharmaceutical companies have rushed to claim their market share by producing so-called 'standardized' extracts of herbs and offering these as superior to the tried and tested methods of naturopathic manufacturing. Nothing could be further from the truth. While 'standardized' extracts may offer benefit of easy consistency of dosage (and cheaper more efficient production lines), they have grave disadvantages.

These include an increase in side effects as the medicines produced in this manner lose the natural protective properties of the herbs. In some cases, these side effects have proved fatal - as was seen in the liver toxicity associated with standardized extracts of kava kava, a herb previously safely used for generations without any known side effects. Most naturopaths recommend what is called the Full Spectrum Method of extraction - which retains the benefits of ALL the active ingredients within the herb as opposed toisolating only one - thereby providing a more complete treatment as well as superior protection against side effects.

Whatever your choice, always choose wisely. Research what is best for you. If you have a chronic or life threatening condition, don't make changes without first discussing them with your doctor in order that your condition may be monitored. Well informed and supportive practitioners will support patients who want to take responsibility for their own health.

In the treatment of arthritis pain, the following herbal and homeopathic remedies are often used as part of the treatment plan.

Natural Remedies for Arthritis Relief Recognizing the need for a healthier and more effective approach, without the side effects of prescription drugs, Native Remedies has developed JointEase Plus and Detox Drops - both 100% herbal remedies containing well researched ingredients and manufactured in therapeutic dosage according to the highest pharmaceutical standards.

JointEase Plus

JointEase Plus is a 100% natural herbal tablet formulated to maintain the health and comfort of joints and the entire muscular-skeletal system. Regular use keeps the joints mobile and free moving.

JointEase Plus can help:

JointEase Plus contains the following therapeutic herbs in convenient tablet form:

-       Harpagophytum Procumbens (Devil's Claw) This herb is indigenous to the Kalahari Desert and is exclusive to Africa. Because of its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, Devil's Claw is used world-wide for osteo-arthritis, fibrositis, rheumatism, small joint disease and lower backache. Scientific analysis shows that the most important active ingredients in Devil's Claw include monoterpine, harpagoside, glycoside, beta-sitosterol, procumbine and stigmasterol.

Warning: Because of its strong anti-inflammatory properties, JointEase is not recommended for people with stomach ulcers or those with any heart conditions, unless supervised by a medical practitioner.

-       Glucosamine sulphate is one of the best bio-available forms of glucosamine supplements and it has been shown that 90 - 98% is readily absorbed in the intestines. Glucosamine has been approved for the treatment of arthritis and other joint and muscular conditions in more than 70 countries throughout the world. Studies have demonstrated its ability to decrease pain and inflammation, increase range of motion and to help repair aging and damaged joints in the hands, knees, hips and spine. Recent studies have suggested that glucosamine may be even more effective than the non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as aspirin and ibuprofen, without the harmful side-effects associated with these drugs. It is well known that while the NSAIDS may mask the pain of arthritis and other joint conditions, they can also impair the body's ability to produce cartilage, thereby worsening the condition in the long run and increasing dependence on anti-inflammatories. In contrast, glucosamine relieves pain and inflammation, while also building and repairing cartilage and connective tissue thereby going far beyond pain relief.

-       Boswellia serata Extracts of the gum of this tree found in India have been used for thousands of years to relieve pain and inflammation. Scientific studies have demonstrated that boswellia has the ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators in the body and to reduce pain and inflammation without irritating or ulcerating the stomach lining. Boswellia has also been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

Detox Drops

Detox Drops is a 100% safe, non-addictive natural herbal remedy formulated for adults by our team of natural health experts. Detox Drops contain a selection of herbs known for their supportive function in promoting liver health and well-being.

Detox Drops can be used as part of a gentle detoxification program to safely cleanse and flush out the system. It supports the body's natural ability to remove toxins and waste by-products, without harmful side effects and without harsh laxatives.

Detox Drops contains the following therapeutic herbs in convenient and fast-acting drop format:

-       Taraxacum officinalis (Dandelion) was commonly used in Native American medicine and is found in many parts of the world today. It contains bitter principles that have a stimulating effect on the liver and digestive system. It is also a very rich source of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamins A, D, C, and B and iron, silicon, magnesium, zinc and manganese. In recent studies, Taraxacum officinalis was shown to have an effect on laboratory animals with respect to body weight. (Racz-Kotilla E, Racz G, Solomon A. The action of Taraxacum officinale extracts on the body weight and diuresis of laboratory animals. Planta Med 1974;26(3):212-217). It enhances liver and gall bladder functioning and may help to maintain healthy blood pressure due to its diuretic properties.

-       Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) has been used since ancient times as a natural appetite suppressant and was traditionally used to prevent 'growling stomachs' during church services. Apart from its natural diuretic properties, Fennel also promotes routine liver, kidney and spleen health and is useful for acidic stomachs. More recently, Fennel has been shown to help alleviate stomach upsets and colic in particular. (Alexandrovich I, Rakovitskaya O, Kolmo E, et al. "The effect of fennel ( Foeniculum vulgare ) seed oil emulsion in infantile colic: a randomized, placebo-controlled study". Altern Ther Health Med . 2003;9:58- 61). Animal and test-tube studies hint at a number of potential medicinal effects of fennel or its constituents, such as relaxing smooth muscles and stimulating the flow of bile. (Forster HB, Niklas H, Lutz S. "Antispasmodic effects of some medicinal plants". Plant Med . 1980;40:303-19). (Tanira MOM, Shah AH, Mohsin A, et al. "Pharmacological and toxicological investigations on Foeniculum vulgare dried fruit extract in experimental animals". Phytother Res . 1996;10:33-6).

-       Pelargonium reniforme is a medicinal plant known to generations of Khoi/San descendants and Xhosa traditional healers for its health-promoting properties. Also known as 'Umckaloabo', it is traditionally used for a range of therapeutic functions and is well known for its supportive capacity on liver functioning and as a digestive tonic. This species of pelargonium is indigenous to the Eastern Cape of South Africa and grows wild, sending out long bulbous roots deep into the ground. The medicinally active ingredients are found in the bitter tasting root of the plant. Recent studies have shown indicated this herb can be beneficial in supporting the body's ability to balance various body systems after illness. (Matthys H, et al. "Efficacy and safety of an extract of Pelargonium sidoides (EPs 7630) in adults with acute bronchitis. A randomised, doubleblind, placebo-controlled trial". Phytomedicine. 2003;10(suppl 4):7-17). Detox Drops contains no gluten, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or animal products.
